Lyrics
Into your presence I long to come to know your safety and your shelter a fortress where I run And to live under the shadow of your wings and not be anxious and have no fear and in faithfulness to trust and in faithfulness I'd trust In faithfulness I long to trust to feel safe and secure within the shadow of my God I always thought that I was strong enough and running to my God was hiding I didn’t see those mighty wings as a cover for my sin and full of grace to keep me safe from falling Into your presence I long to come to know your safety and your shelter a fortress where I run to be a fortress where I run to be a fortress where I can run where my confidence is found to rest in hope on solid ground to rest in hope on solid ground to rest in hope on solid ground
Song Story
This song was inspired by Psalm 91.
It is a recognition that God is my strength.
I had always struggled with the concept of hiding under God’s wings. I was brought up to be independent and not to rely upon others but to push through difficult events in my own strength. Therefore, I perceived “hiding” under God’s wings as being too weak to cope with things in life. I didn’t want God to be like a crutch that I had to lean on when things got tough.
This song arose out of a personal revelation… that the “shadow of His wings” refers to His mercy where we can come under it and be hidden from judgement. It is representative of being in God’s presence in the fullness of my salvation. If I think I don’t need salvation then I am vulnerable to the ways of the world with its hatred and selfishness. Living “under His wings” is allowing God to take care of the ‘stuff’ that is burdening me. It is not a place of hiding but a place of enduring in God’s strength rather than my own.
I began to see that to live under the shadow of his wings is actually standing up in this world, rather than hiding from it. It is a place of all-encompassing love and grace, knowing that I am a child of God and He is my Father.
