A New Perspective

A New Perspective Audio

I began composing this piece at Binbrook (our country property) on our last visit before the isolation restrictions came into force. I felt a sense of uneasiness that it may be a while before we came back and was unsure about what was about to happen. It felt a bit like being on the brink of a storm where there is a warning but you are not sure if the warning is an exaggeration or an understatement.

So, we came home from Binbrook and the restrictions came into place the next week. We knew we couldn’t go back to our cottage for a little while so I sat in my studio at home and little by little this piece came together.

As I played, a verse of scripture came to mind. Proverbs 3:5-6 “trust in the lord with all your heart and do not rely upon your own understanding”.  Now “trusting in the Lord” can seem a little intangible especially in the current climate. I delved into the whole chapter of Proverbs and began to gain an understanding that ‘trusting’ involves gaining God’s wisdom and therefore seeing the world from God’s perspective.

I believe that the message for the church, at the present time, is to accept that God’s perspective is different from ours. We need to trust Him because even though things seem quite devastating, God has not changed. He is still the same loving Father who is pursuing us. He is not punishing us. If we can just catch a glimpse of how He sees us then we can rise up above our fear and anxiety and be in His presence… and see our lives from a new perspective.

To help put this message across I have put together the following video. It begins with the image of a hill to climb and then looking out over the countryside from that height. It then shifts to climbing a mountain and looking out at that summit. Finally, it takes us above the clouds… to a new perspective.

About the score… find a sample of the score below. If you are a pianist who is about Grade 4-5 then I think you would be able to play this. It is not technically difficult but requires mature musicianship for the rubato and to play expressively with a depth of emotion and musicality. If you wish to obtain a full copy of the piano score then please contact Carolyn.
